ZSX Primus
The latest instrument in Rigaku's ZSX series, the ZSX Primus continues the tradition of delivering accurate results in a timely and seamless manner, with unsurpassed reliability, flexibility, and ease of use to meet any challenges in today's laboratory. With Rigaku's experience in anticipating and exceeding customer expectations, the ZSX Primus is the #1 answer to ALL your X-ray needs.
The ZSX Primus provides aggressive performance with the flexibility for analyzing the most complex samples. The 30 micron tube, the thinnest end-window tube available in the industry, guarantees that light elements are easy and clear to interpret. Combined with the most advanced mapping package to detect homogeneity and inclusions, the ZSX Primus is heads above the competition. With a smaller footprint than other full size XRF instruments, the ZSX Primus is ready to meet the challenges facing your lab in the 21st century.

Features & benefits include:
Analysis of elements from Be to U
Smaller footprint: requires less valuable lab space
Micro Analysis: analyze samples as small as 500 ґ
Tube below design: optimized for liquids and loose powders
30 ґ tube: best light element performance in the industry
Mapping: elemental topography/distribution
He seal: sample chamber is always under vacuum

Simultaneous XRD and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) for Pharmaceutical Applications
Phase transitions between the various solid states have been the focus of much attention for several decades, and a variety of methods have been used to study their structural, thermal and kinetic properties. Among them, XRD and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) have proven to be two of the most useful techniques, and to be complementary to one another. Parallel measurements of different specimens using XRD and DSC, and a combination of both data are one of the popular ways of studying thermal reactions of solids. Problems arises, however, because many chemical reactions of solids, for instance the dehydration of hydrates, depend markedly on the experimental conditions - such as the nature of the atmosphere, shape of the container, the heating rate, etc. Such problems can be overcome by simultaneously performing XRD and DSC measurements on the same sample, and thus Rigaku/MSC offers the XRD-DSC for these special applications.
A presentation on this subject will be given at the Denver conference.

Comments on calibrating the ZSX-Mini system:
It would appear that they cheated a little on this note, as the C-114 specification states that you need to make a second set of standards to do the comparison test several days after the original calibration. As always if you run the same standards you calibrated with as unknowns you will surely get excellent, but unrealistic results. I did a straight comparison of the Venus against the Rigaku mini earlier this year and the Venus has 2 to 13 times the sensitivity of the ZSX mini for most elements. The Venus cannot pass the C-114 test if done in the correct way, so I doubt that ZSX min can.

At Pittcon 2002, Rigaku /MSC introduced the ZSX Mini Benchtop WDXRF Analyzer. Press releases for the ZSX Mini describes its use in the paper and pulp industry, in the cement industry for ASTM C114-00 rapid methods, and for screening of contaminants in soils. The company claims the instrument can be used in mobile laboratories.

March 1, 2001, Rigaku/USA and its fully owned subsidiary, Molecular Structure Corporation (MSC), merged to form a new company, Rigaku/MSC, Inc. This action follows a transition year in which Rigaku/USA’s XRD, XRF, and semiconductor groups were moved from Danvers, MA to MSC’s new facility in The Woodlands, TX USA. The newly formed company is a fully owned subsidiary of the Rigaku Group and acts as a distributor of Rigaku’s XRD, XRF, and semiconductor instrumentation in North America and Rigaku’s single crystal instrumentation throughout the world, except for Japan and parts of Asia.

Rigaku/MSC achieved sales of over $40M for the fiscal year ending February 28, 2001. The 165 employees are spread between the headquarters in The Woodlands, TX USA, the European branch in Seven Oaks, UK, a software group in Provo, UT USA and a vacuum product division in Danvers, MA USA.

In December 1999, Rigaku/USA acquired Osmic, Inc. (Troy, MI, USA), a major supplier of optical components for XRD, XRF and single crystal diffraction. Bilateral product development between the Rigaku Group and Osmic is leading to innovative new products that significantly improve the home-lab capabilities for protein crystallography. While the use of synchrotron radiation will continue to be important for structural proteomics, the demand for high-performance, home-lab protein crystallographic capabilities continues to increase.
