New relation between Omega systems and an ex Spectro worker:
Dr. Schramm worked for Spectro until June 2002. He started in Spectro about 8 years ago. He has a chemical background and was responsible for the development of the Xepos. His job in Spectro was the sales manager for the EDX systems in Europe. In June this year he started his own business selling sample cups and parts for sample preparation. He is now the European sales representative for a American sample preparation company (I think it is Spex). He is located in Kleve in the same building of the company HD Electronic. The owner of HD Electronic is Mr. Dzierzawa, some of you already know him. I heard from Mr. Dzierzawa and Dr. Schramm that they met Wil de Jongh jr. and that there will be a cooperation between their companies and Dr. Schramm will sell, install and train UniQuant. They are also working on a sample preparation method of glass beads for Ferro alloys. This will be finished beginning of 2003 and will be offered to UniQuant users.

THIRD QUARTER 2002
Net sales for the three months ended September 30, 2002 increased 27% to $26.9 million, compared to $21.2 million for the three months ended September 30, 2001. The net sales increase was driven by continued strong demand for our systems, particularly in the materials research segment. Excluding favorable currency effects, third quarter 2002 net sales increased 19% year-over-year.
In the third quarter of 2002, Bruker AXS took a previously announced restructuring charge of $1.8 million before taxes, primarily for its workforce and cost reduction program. Net income for the third quarter 2002, excluding the after-tax effects of the restructuring charge, was $0.3 million, or $0.01 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $(0.3) million, or $(0.01) per diluted share, for the third quarter 2001. On a GAAP basis, the net loss for the third quarter 2002 was $(0.8) million or $(0.01) per diluted share.
Cash and cash equivalents totaled $49.1 million as of September 30, 2002.
NINE MONTHS ENDED SEPTEMBER 30, 2002
Net sales for the nine months ended September 30, 2002 increased 24% to $74.7 million, compared to $60.2 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2001. Excluding favorable currency effects, year-to-date net sales increased 21% compared to the prior year.

The Italian subsidiary of Spectro Analytical Instruments GmbH&Co has appointed six new local sales agencies. Among the appointments, Assing SpA (Monerotondo), an established distributor of electron microscopy and X-ray instrumentation, is now the exclusive agent for Spectro’s XRF products across most of Italy. Spectro Italia’s general manager, Stefano Pintossi, said that the changes brought the company "closer to our existing customer base of more than 850 installed units in Italy" and effectively doubled the commercial and technical capabilities of Spectro in the region.

ECO 25 - Thermoreactor with voltage changer:
The thermoreactor ECO 25 has a capacity of 25 round glass test tubes with 16 mm external diameter. It is devised for sample preparation in determining COD, total phosphorus, total chromium and other parameters in water and sludge.
The block holding the test tubes is manufactured from an aluminium alloy which allows a very good thermal homogeneity at all the selectable temperatures.
The temperature of the heating block is controlled by a microprocessor with a PID logic.
The temperature probe is a Pt100 probe which does not require any calibration because the electronics after each turning on performs a self calibration. All this allows a very good precision and reproducibility.
The ECO8 thermoreactor is equipped by a voltage changer, accessible on the rear of the instrument, allowing a connection to electric nets 230 V or 115 V.
The unit is equipped by safety devices assuring high protection in all the phases of use: a cover manufactured from Teflon and a transparent cap to be placed over the test tubes during heating.
The heating block is equipped by a protection against over temperatures given by a thermostat which turns off the heating when the temperature exceeds 180°C.

Technical Paper - "A Micro and Macro Vision of Clay/Fluid Interaction":

Investigating the swelling characteristics of shale formations is vital in selecting a proper drilling fluid to give maximum inhibition and wellbore stability.

Using the OFITE Dynamic Linear Swell Meter, some studies were done to determine the changes in clay/fluid interaction for short periods of time (0 – 5 min) as well as longer periods (>350 min), yielding some surprising results. A must read for those in the drilling industry!
