Use of the new Spinning Drop Tensiometer SITE100 for characterization of critical micelle concentrations.
The stability of emulsions is to a large extent determined by interfacial properties of the participating phases, and their storage stability can be optimized by the use of emulsifiers to lower the interfacial tension. This is made possible by the fact that the reduction in the interfacial tension lowers the driving force for separating the oil and water phases. The optimum adjustment of the necessary amount at a particular temperature depends on the diffusion rate at the interfacial boundary and the critical micelle concentration, among other things.

The Washburn "C" Factor for characterization of porous coatings.
Porous coatings find application in a wide variety of industrial, military, and medical applications. For example, porous photo and electro catalytic coatings are used in applications ranging from chromate production to cyanide destruction - and are also being explored for use in air and water treatment. In the medical field, porous coatings are used on the surface of replacement joints to promote a stable bone-implant interface by providing support for both ingrowth and ongrowth. Porous coatings are also widely used to support various reagents for blood and plasma analysis on diagnostic strips and slides.

Thermo Electron Establishes Customer Demonstration Centers at Key Locations Around the World
Newest Center Opens Near Paris, France
WALTHAM, Mass., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- As part of its strategy to provide comprehensive solutions based on its broad line of analytical instruments, scientific equipment, software, and services, Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO) has established customer demonstration centers in major cities worldwide. The newest facility, located just south of Paris in Les Ulis, France, opened its doors to customers today.
Similar centers opened earlier this year in Yokohama, Japan and Frankfurt, Germany. Each features a complete laboratory equipped with Thermo's advanced chromatography, mass spectrometry, and spectroscopy product lines; sample preparation and storage equipment; and laboratory informatics software.
"For the first time, our customers can visit one of these centers and see how completely Thermo's products can be integrated to equip their lab, from preparing and analyzing samples to managing data," said Marijn E. Dekkers, president and chief executive officer of Thermo Electron. "These centers not only allow us to display the breadth of our offerings, but also to create a single point of contact for our customers. While the integration of our product lines has helped us to operate more efficiently, just as important, it allows Thermo to be seen as a very large player in the instrumentation marketplace. These demonstration centers are another example of Thermo's efforts to present one face to our customer base using the single Thermo brand."
As part of its commercial integration process in the past year, Thermo also combined sales and marketing offices into single facilities in Madrid, Spain; Milan, Italy; Beijing, China; Breda, The Netherlands; and Helsinki, Finland.

(NYSE: AME) today announced the acquisition of Chandler Instruments Company, LLC, a leading manufacturer of high-quality measurement instrumentation for the oil and gas industry, for approximately $50 million. With its headquarters in Tulsa, OK, Chandler has expected 2003 sales of approximately $30 million.

"We are very pleased with our acquisition of Chandler Instruments," comments AMETEK Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frank S. Hermance. "This acquisition further expands our high-end analytical instrument platform, building on a set of differentiated, higher-growth businesses that now total nearly $180 million in revenue."

"Chandler adds to AMETEK’s strong presence in the oil and gas industry by expanding into upstream drilling and completion instruments as well as extending our product offering in downstream markets, adding new technologies and customers," adds Mr. Hermance.

Chandler Instruments designs and manufactures products through two operating companies: Chandler Engineering and Grabner Instruments. Chandler Engineering is focused on the upstream markets of oil and gas exploration and production, selling to many of the world’s major integrated petroleum and oil services companies. Chandler Engineering produces instruments for the drilling and completion market as well as instrumentation for production enhancement, reservoir development and pipeline transmission.

Grabner, based in Austria, is a world leader in the design and manufacture of test instruments for analyzing fuels and other liquids. Products include vapor pressure measurement instruments, flash point analyzers and spectrometers. These products are focused on downstream petroleum refining and distribution markets as well as the fragrance, flavors and paint markets.

Chandler Instruments joins AMETEK as part of its Electronic Instruments Group (EIG) --a recognized leader in advanced monitoring, testing, calibrating and display instruments. AMETEK EIG sells its instruments to the process, aerospace, power, and industrial markets worldwide and had 2002 sales of approximately $540 million.
